Jeep shows off Fiat-based CUV - Click above to watch video after the jump

There have been plenty of murmurings about how Fiat's partnership with Chrysler will impact the Jeep brand. Exactly how much platform sharing will occur between the Italian automaker and the Pentastar's globe-roaming purveyor of SUVs has been a hot topic amongst the Jeep faithful for some time. Now it appears that a video posted on YouTube by user thejeepchannel has given the world its first glance at a new Fiat-based crossover set to wear the famous seven-slot grille. In the video, a Jeep intern learns a bit about the company's design process, all while hovering around a clay model of one very CUV-looking creation.

Chrysler has made no qualms about the fact that it will produce an SUV on the C-Evo platform, and has even made noise about which of the company's manufacturing facilities will build the vehicle.

Our guess is that the clay model in the video is none other than that very high-rider. Judging by the clay, the CUV will wear a host of typical Jeep design cues, including squared-off fender arches and overhangs. Follow the jump to see for yourself.

*Update: Chrysler has released the following statement concerning the vehicle in the video:
"While we certainly appreciate the interest, the clay model and sketches in the YouTube video represent past design studies, not the future of Jeep design. This and similar videos are targeted toward college students and the youth market in general, to build excitement about the Jeep brand, and to provide a glimpse into some of the processes we go through to create iconic Jeep vehicles."

  • Older Jeep Grand Cherokees being investigated for fuel tank defects -

Filed under: SUV, Government/Legal, Safety, Jeep

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees over concerns that their rear-mounted gas tank may be prone to rupture in the event of an accident. The agency has recorded 44 instances where a ruptured fuel tank may have contributed to a total of 55 deaths resulting from fire.

The Center for Auto Safety, a consumer advocacy group founded by Ralph Nader, requested the NHTSA investigation. In response to the Washington-based group's petition, NHTSA issued the following in a statement: "The existence of these post-crash fires does not, by itself, establish a defect. Further review and investigation into these incidents is needed." And so an investigation we shall have.

A preliminary report from NHTSA suggested that there wasn't any evidence that the 1993-2004 Grand Cherokee's fuel tanks were "over-represented for post-crash fires." If this investigation leads to a recall, Chrysler has indicated that it will cooperate with the agency.

2011 Jeep Wranglers on the rocks

After a bevy of leaked product images and spy shots, official confirmation of an updated 2011 Jeep Wrangler can hardly be considered a surprise, but it's still a welcome development. For its next model year, the venerable four-wheeler will receive a comprehensive (and much needed) interior update, along with a body-color removable hardtop available on the Sahara trim.

2011 Jeep Wrangler dashboardThe new Wrangler, which has just gone into production this week at Chrysler's Toledo Assembly Complex, gets a new steering wheel, instrument panel, reworked center stack, and even larger rear windows. Other changes include a lockable console, gooshier armrests and upgraded materials all around.

On the creature-feature front, there's a new USB interface for keeping those top-down tunes flowing, as well as Bluetooth streaming audio. You'll be able to hear your music of choice even better in the 2011 model, too, as the company has splashed out for a new 'acoustical treatment' designed to cut the Jeep's (in)famous cabin din. Of course, if you're buying a Wrangler, you're probably not looking for the ultimate in refinement, but at first blush, these measured updates strike a nice balance with us.

Finally, a brace of new paint colors make the scene for the new model year, including Bright White, Cosmos Blue, Deep Cherry Red, Detonator Yellow, and Sahara Tan.

Check out the revised Wrangler in our high-res gallery below and see the rest of the story in the press release after the jump.

  • Spy Shots: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 spied with 6.4L Hemi V8 underhood -

Filed under: Spy Photos, Performance, SUV, Jeep

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee - the pride and joy of Chrysler at the moment - is just now hitting dealerships, but the automaker is already hard at work on a high-powered SRT-fettled version of its new sport 'ute. In the past, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 has always been a guilty pleasure of ours, if only for the rocket-like 6.1-liter Hemi V8 underhood.

Good news then that Chrysler is prepping an all new 6.4-liter Hemi for use in its SRT products, and we're anxious to see how this new engine works in the Grand Cherokee application, which seems likely to hit as a 2012 model.

Early reports suggested that it could be good for around 450 horsepower, but spy photographers are saying that we could see over 500 raging stallions coming out of this new monster mill. This means the new Grand Cherokee SRT8 could rip off 0-60 times in under five seconds, and we might have a truly worthy American competitor for the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, AMG-badged Mercedes-Benz ML and BMW X5 M. Here's hoping.

  • Spy Shots: 2011 Jeep Wrangler getting substantial interior redo -

Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, SUV, Jeep, Design/Style, Off-Road

Last week, spy photos showed us that the 2011 Wrangler's exterior looks like it will get some fresh upgrades including a body-colored roof and sleeker, more aerodynamic-looking front bumpers. Now it looks like the Wrangler's interior is getting a desperately needed boost as well. Our friends at super-fan website Allpar possess a high quality interior spy pic that shows off what appears to be a big-time upgrade from the outgoing rock-climber's Playskool-inspired innards.

The first thing that catches our eyes is what looks like an abundance of high-quality soft touch dash and door insert materials, but we won't know for sure until we can get our hands on a sample. The outgoing Wrangler's steering wheel is a real dud with no redundant controls - even on the $34,000 Rubicon model, but that appears to be changing for 2011 as well. The new piece looks to have all the modern redundant controls, and we don't see the current model's awkward cruise control stalk either, and that's a very good thing. Finally, we see plenty of polished aluminum-look trim adorning the doors, dash and vents, giving the new Wrangler a more uplevel feel.

Click on the image on the right to head over to Allpar where you can see the uncropped image. We're thinking that while the photo doesn't exactly show a beautiful interior, it sure shows a clear, functional upgrade versus the 2010 model's cabin. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

  • Spy Shots: 2011 Jeep Wrangler to get color-matched hardtop? *UPDATE -

Filed under: Spy Photos, SUV, Jeep, Off-Road

2011 Jeep Wrangler spy shots - Click above for image gallery

As the most iconic model from a certifiable American institution such as Jeep, it comes as little surprise that every new version of the venerable Wrangler (or CJ if you happen to remember Carter's presidency) causes pangs of distress from Jeep's loyal fanbase. Still, from the square headlights of the original Wrangler YJ to the coil springs of the Wrangler TJ and finally - and easily the most egregious of all in our eyes - the loss of the stalwart 4.0 HO inline-six in favor of the 3.8-liter V6 from a minivan in the latest JK, the Wrangler has continued to sell.

That doesn't seem likely to change for 2011, either. From what we can tell from these few spy shots that were snapped at the Jeep factory in Toledo, Ohio, the biggest external change to the next Wrangler is the inclusion of a color-matched hardtop. This is definitely not a bad thing. We can only hope that the next significant alteration to the tried-and-true off-roader-for-the-masses model includes a new drivetrain. Pentastar V6, please, along with automatic and manual transmissions with six forward ratios each. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

*UPDATE: Thanks to some eagle-eyed readers, we just noticed that these 2011 Wranglers also seem to sport a new, more aerodynamic front bumper design as well. Thanks qwerty777!

Jeep Extreme Trail Edition Camper - Click above for high-res image gallery

We know what you're thinking. What good is a vehicle capable of overlanding to the remotest parts of the planet if there's no place to lay your head when you arrive at your for-the-night destination? Here's a bit of good news for you world travelers: Jeep has just announced a new Trail Edition Camper that will be available as an official Mopar accessory from any Jeep dealership. And it looks just about perfect hooked up behind a new Wrangler.

From what we can see in the high-res image gallery below, these trailers are pop-ups that fold down to a manageable size for towing. Each trailer will sport sleeping arrangements for four with one dedicated queen-size bed (the other sleeping quarters are converted from the table and couch), built-in aluminum cabinet, 110-volt power supply and a "premium canvas enclosure."

Two models will be available, the standard Trail Edition Camper and the (*cue monster-truck-announcer voice*) Extreme Trail Edition Camper. While the basic model gets 32-inch tires and 12 incles of ground clearance, the Extreme Edition ups the ante with 35-inch BFGs and a whopping 15 inches of clearance. Other suitably extreme upgrades include a beefed-up frame and full underbody skid plates.

Pricing starts at $9,995 for the regular model and $11,995 for the Extreme. Full details and specifications can be found after the break, and we highly suggest you check out our high-res image gallery below.

  • Report: Chrysler delays planned expansion of Toledo plant -

Filed under: SUV, Plants/Manufacturing, Crossover, Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat

    Jeep

It's no secret that Chrysler's future plans are in a constant state of flux right now. After all, the automaker just went through a ridiculously fast bankruptcy where bits and pieces were shed before stewardship was handed over to Italy's Fiat. It's only natural that Chrysler's new management would need some time to get itself organized.

According to The Toledo Blade, Chrysler decisionmakers are still up in the air as to how the Toledo North Assembly Plant figures into the company's future roadmap. Previously, Chrysler said the Ohio facility would build three new SUVs based on Fiat's C-Evo platform to replace the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro.

Apparently, however, Chrysler has three plants that could build the new 'utes - Toledo, Belvedere, Illinois and Sterling Heights, Michigan. The reality is that the Pentastar really only needs two of them to handle the project. Alternately, all three could build the vehicles using fewer shifts. At this point, it's anyone's guess which, if any, of these facilities will be left out in the cold, and what the resulting employee impact will be.

Porsche once again grabs the top spot (for the sixth time in a row) in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study. This year's study asked 76,000 owners 90 days after purchasing their 2010 model-year cars "how gratifying their new vehicle is to own and drive." The answer, for the first time since 1997, was that the domestic brands were more "appealing" as a whole than the imports (the domestics earned a score of 787 on a 1,000-point scale - 13 points greater than the imports).

When it comes down to specific awards (as shown in the segment-level graphics), Ford leads with five. The automaker earned one each for the Expedition, Explorer Sport Trac, Flex, Fusion and Taurus. Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen each garner two awards. The Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Avalanche, both segment leaders, are the only two models that ranked highest in the 2010 APEAL study and in the 2010 Initial Quality Study (IQS) announced in June. Suzuki is credited with the greatest improvement this year, while Jeep drops one slot from last year's 2009 APEAL Study and falls to the bottom of the list for 2010. Check out the gallery for the graphics, and read the full press release after the break.

  • Dodge recalling 22,000 2010MY trucks, SUVs over brake issue -

Filed under: SUV, Truck, Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Dodge, Jeep

Chrysler has found a defect with certain 2010 Dodge Nitro, Dodge Ram 1500, Jeep Liberty and Jeep Wrangler models that could hinder braking. An improper flare on a brake tube that connects the master cylinder to the hydraulic control unit is being blamed for the problem. The HCU is part of the anti-lock braking system, and the faulty flare may leak and lead to a loss of brake fluid, which could lead to reduced braking performance and heighten the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will replace the tubes on 22,118 vehicles at its own cost under safety recall starting in August. Concerned owners can also phone in at 800-853-1403 or visit The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's safercar.gov website. NHTSA is tracking this effort under campaign ID number 10V315000.

  • Chrysler expands 60-day 'risk-free' return policy to Jeep, Dodge and Ram -

Filed under: Car Buying, Marketing/Advertising, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep

Back in February, Chrysler rolled out its "Minivan Pledge," which gave customers the choice of returning their vehicle within 60 days if they were unhappy in any way. The program must have been successful for Team Pentastar, because the program is now being expanding to all Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Truck models. Chrysler Lead Executive for U.S. Sales Fred Diaz says in the company's press release that the program will give customers "the confidence to know they made the right purchase or they can return the vehicle no questions asked."

Chrysler has also announced July incentives, which, we're guessing, will render the 60 day guarantee almost completely useless. See, customers will be able to choose from incentives like zero percent financing for up to 72 months, cash rebates of up to $4,000 or the 60-day guarantee. So if you're in, say, a Dodge dealership and you're given a choice of $4,000 on the hood or a 60-day return policy that can only add up to $1,000 ($500 per month), which would you take? Hit the jump to read the Chrysler press release.

  • Spy Shots: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 caught towing -

Filed under: Spy Photos, Performance, SUV, Jeep

The last generation Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 was always one of our favorite high-performance SUVs and its 6.1-liter Hemi V8 lunacy never failed to delight. Thankfully, with the brand-new Grand Cherokee now entering showrooms, a new SRT8 is apparently on the way as well.

A low-riding, big-tired, deep-chinned Jeep has been spotted out testing with a trailer, and it looks to be the SRT8 successor. The new model will likely be powered by an upgraded Hemi that's punched out to 6.4-liters with an output boosted to 480 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

The prototype dispenses with the central exhaust tips on the old model in favor of more typical outboard pipes, which at least makes it easier to rig up a tow hitch. While this could change back for production, the fact that the prototype is toting a trailer could be a sign that Jeep wants to improve its utility beyond the 3,500 pounds of the outgoing model.

2005 Jeep Gladiator Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

All hail the Jeep Comanche? Well, not exactly. But the old XJ-based single cab pickup certainly has something of a loyal fan base. The same can be said of every other pickup truck the Toledo-based off-road specialists have ever created, including the classic CJ-8 Scrambler. And the darn-near-perfect-in-every-way Jeep Gladiator concept from 2005 got nothing but rave reviews from everyone who saw it at the Detroit Auto Show.

So, perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that our friends at PickupTrucks.com are reporting that Jeep is once again considering entering the pickup truck market. Apparently, newly minted Jeep CEO Mike Manley has his eyes on the segment globally and believes that the concept of a Jeep pick 'em-up-truck has some profitable legs.

Considering that the Ford Ranger continues to sell in reasonably decent numbers despite not seeing any real updates since the Jurassic period and that the Mahindra pickup has generated a good bit of interest before even hitting the American scene, we have to wonder if there may be some pent-up demand for a small, capable pickup in America. In any case, don't expect any sort of official comment from Jeep... but feel free to keep your fingers crossed.

In the span of three years, Chrysler has been bought and sold more times than Duke Cunningham. Its warped "merger of equals" with Daimler ended in 2007 and the disastrous reign of incompetence extended into its relationship with Cerberus Capital Management - now a "bad word" within the hallowed halls of Chrysler, according to one exec.

After filing for bankruptcy in April of 2009, the reformed Chrysler Group partnered with the Italian automaking juggernauts at Fiat and have since rolled out a five-year business plan that's nothing if not ambitious.

But you didn't come here for an abbreviated history lesson on Chrysler and its failed suitors. You want to find out how your $6.6 billion in federal funding is being spent and if the company's products are finally up to snuff. Well, here's the short version: The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first Chrysler product since the 300 that deserves your attention. Follow the jump to find out why.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon: A ride for thrill-seekers

By Warren Brown / The Washington Post

I once traveled the Continental Divide Trail from Durango, Colo., to Chama, N.M.

It was a challenging off-road trip in a Land Rover Range Rover. But this week's test vehicle, the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, would have handled the journey just as well at a substantially lower equipment cost.

The Wrangler Rubicon is not for everyone, just as California's Rubicon Trail, for which this Wrangler is named, isn't for everyone.

Off-road vehicles on the Rubicon Trail, about 12 miles from Loon Lake to Lake Tahoe, travel tortuous terrain, long regarded as the most difficult in North America for people who love pitting themselves and their four-wheel-drive machines against Mother Nature.

It is an odd contest in which the only "victory" for man and machine is survival -- leaving the trail with body and vehicle intact.

If you are not a fan of off-road motoring excursions, if you are unwilling to accept risks in pursuit of the joys of such trips, you will never appreciate or understand vehicles such as the Wrangler Rubicon, the winner of 4 Wheel & Off-Road magazine's 2007 4x4 of the Year award.

It is a matter of culture, one distinctly different from daily urban life in which the primary concern of many drivers is miles per gallon. Out there on the Rubicon Trail, or along the high, narrow passes of the Continental Divide with its numerous rock-strewn and switchback roads, the major vehicle concern is prowess --the ability to keep rolling, however slowly or cautiously, over or around obstacles that could turn an outing into a lengthy hospital stay.

It is of little use to ask why people choose such adventures. The fact is that they do it and enjoy it, as evidenced by the 400,000 who subscribe to 4 Wheel & Off-Road. The Wrangler Rubicon helps them to do it better -- with more reliability and safety -- than most other sport-utility models priced under $30,000.

In that regard, the Wrangler Rubicon's strengths constitute its primary weaknesses in routine city-suburban commuting, where it is least efficient, least comfortable and generally less than enjoyable.

For example, consider the Wrangler Rubicon's suspension system. It uses live axles front and rear. A live axle is one of two kinds of beam axles. Live axles contain drive shafts that transmit power to drive wheels. Another type of beam axle, a dead axle, transmits no power.

Beam axles are simple, relatively inexpensive to install and usually tough. They are good for carrying heavy loads and taking the abuse generally encountered in off-road travel. They are lousy for pavement driving, where their ruggedness often translates to a brutally bumpy ride.

I have driven the Wrangler Rubicon and other four-wheel-drive models in a number of off-road venues where I fell in love with their brawling personalities. But my assistant, Ria Manglapus, got the assignment to drive the Wrangler Rubicon in regular city-suburban commuting, during which she took a daily motorized beating.

"It was so bumpy, it made me feel like I was driving in Manila," said Ria, a native of the Philippines.

She had other complaints: "There was a lot of play in the steering wheel," which meant that handling at expressway speeds was sometimes dicey. "The headrests in the back seats are so big, they limit rearview vision."

Also, according to Ria, getting in and out of the Wrangler Rubicon wasn't always easy.

I almost felt sorry for her. But life is tough, and it's historically tougher on assistants. But she got the final laugh. She handed me the bill for filling the Wrangler Rubicon's 18.6-gallon tank with regular unleaded gasoline: $48.

    Info:

In many ways, this is the ultimate Jeep, named after the “General Purpose” (“G.P.” designation in the American Army) transportation designed to mobilise troops around the fields of war. Like the Land Rover Defender, it has remained true to its roots and is unrefined, rough riding, but heaps of fun to own. Its off-road capabilities are legendary.
